One Direction in Dubai

More than 3,000 people queued up through the early hours of Thursday morning as tickets for One Direction’s first ever and only Middle East gig went on sale amid a flurry of excitement.

Mall of the Emirates opened its doors especially to host a one-off event at Virgin Megastore, during which the first of the 30,000 tickets were sold. There was a similar event in Abu Dhabi, though reports suggest there were considerably fewer people.

Fan Dani De Andy, 15, was the first to get her hands on the goodies, hailing it as the best day of her life. Friend Hannah Edmondson, also 15, was close behind her, with the pair admitting they had been queueing since 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Behind them, thousands more teenagers – and the weary-eyed parents – waited patiently. Virgin Radio were broadcasting live from the event, adding another dose of showbiz to proceedings, and as the girls screamed and the the excitement built, one could have been forgiven for thinking the band were there in person.

Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne will perform for thousands of screaming fans at the Sevens Stadium on April 4 2015. The concert – part of 1D’s ‘On the Road Again’ tour – will be the only gig in the entire region for the world’s biggest boy band, with no further plans for shows in the Middle East or North Africa.

There are four ticket categories for the show, which go on sale at 10am online, with ‘Diamond’ the most expensive at Dhs1,000. Up to 7,500 lucky Diamond ticket holders will be able to take their place in front of the stage, with expectation from organisers Done Events that it is they that will be sold out the quickest. After that is ‘Gold’, priced at Dhs500 and providing access to the area close to the B-Stage, in the middle of the action. ‘Silver’ is a standing category at Dhs300 per ticket. Finally at the back a seating grandstand will be erected, for ‘Bronze’ ticket holders. Each ticket category has an overflow area in the grandstands running the length of the pitch.

Done Events also claimed there will be a longer trunk out into the crowd than there was at Justin Bieber’s Dubai gig. Doors are likely to open at 4pm, with the crowds getting the first glimpse of their idols at around 8pm.
