Basketball fans are in for a treat this autumn with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set to headline the second Dubai Health and Fitness Weekend in aid of diabetes from October 28-31.

The 67 year-old is the NBA’ s all-time leading points scorer, won a record six NBA Most Valuable Player Awards and was included in the NBA All-Star team 19 times during a career that ran from 1969 to 1989. Since his retirement, Abdul-Jabbar has gone on to become a celebrated author, filmmaker and ambassador of education.

During his visit the American is set to meet fans and hold coaching clinics while aiming to increase awareness of the importance of health and fitness by encouraging the UAE community to lead active lifestyles.

It will be the second time a basketball star has been involved in the project, following LA Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant’s visit to the Emirate last year, which saw him coach a celebrity basketball match in front over an adoring crowd.

Maven Marketing and Events managing director Sarah Omolewu said Abdul-Jabbar was the perfect candidate to engage the local community on the subject of healthy living.

“Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is quite popular in the region, not just because he’s a basketball legend but in addition to that he is also a Muslim,” said Omolewu. “One of our objectives is to utilise these big athletes to get across a key message of health and fitness.”

Full details of Abdul Jabbar’s itinerary in Dubai will be released after Ramadan.
