FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Authentic design throughout the main dining area is a throwback to the restaurant’s South African roots while the long, sweeping open kitchen is a hive of activity, adding plenty of atmosphere before you’ve already sat down.

VIBE
The place was heaving on our visit. The staff positively bounce around the place be it between orders or for their special live music performances for those diners enjoying a special occasion. Enjoyment is at the heart of everything the restaurant does, though food quality doesn’t suffer.

WHAT TO ORDER
Stick traditional we say. Start with boerewors – a large dense South African sausage served grilled with polenta – or biltong (listed as a side order), essentially beef jerky. For mains, it would be silly to avoid steaks, though plenty of fish and other meat are available. We went big with the Silver Fern New Zealand A-Grade Grass-Fed fillet (Dhs215), partnered with the inventive blue cheese and vodka sauce.

LOOK OUT FOR
On special occasions – when your table will also get a live performance from rum-beating, toe-tapping staff – you’ll do well to opt for the wagyu in a range of cuts and sizes – our favourite was the 300g fillet with lobster (Dhs385).

IDEAL FOR
Groups looking for good food and the feeling of celebration. It’s loud but not intrusive with a feeling a food and entertainment.

INSIDER INFO
Most if not all of the staff hail from Africa and are full of insight and opinion about their homeland, as well as the menu. Engaging with them for five minutes is highly recommended, especially with several dishes literally needing translation.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Look past the rather uninventive name because the food at The Meat Co is anything but, it’s to be taken seriously. To marry the joviality of the atmosphere with excellent food and even more engaging service, is no mean feat.
