Known as ‘waka ama’ to the Maoris of New Zealand, the outrigger canoe has long been the transport of choice for Polynesian Islanders. You can try it out for yourself at the Dubai Outrigger Canoe Club. Six people sit in a long, thin canoe, with an extra hull (or ‘outrigger’) for stability, and propel themselves with paddles. Hardcore competitors race over several lung-bursting kilometres, crashing through the open seas.
