From the court to the club: former NBA star turned DJ Rony Seikaly
What’s On previews Rony Seikaly in Dubai, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, Golden Tulip Al Jazira Hotel, Ghantoot. The 6’11 tall star used to play for Miami Heat.
Most athletes retire to a quiet life of golf, punditry, endorsements. Not Rony Seikaly. When the former Miami Heat centre retired from professional basketball, he pursued his dream of becoming a DJ and producer. A string of lauded releases and slam-dunk club sets later, the big man (6’11”) breezes into Blue Marlin to play alongside Jean Claude Ades and Cirillo on Friday.
What’s the one record that you can’t live without? The Whistle Song by Frankie Knuckles. It was one of the first house tracks that really inspired me. I truly love that track.
Who inspired you most growing up? Definitely the great Danny Tenaglia. Anyone who can perform and actively engage a crowd while alternating through a myriad of musical genres for 18 hours – well, they’re inspirational in my book.
What does the perfect party look and sound like? A perfect party has to have a sound that resonates with the people listening and with the DJ who is playing. It’s a vibe that clicks between everyone and when it happens, it’s a magical time.
Aside from home, where’s your favourite place in the world? I love Ibiza. I’ve been going for over two decades. It has so much more to offer than just clubs. Ibiza has some great beaches, great restaurants – and no shortage of fun, crazy people.
