New underground club in Dubai with Berlin influence
What’s On previews the opening of one of the newest clubs in Dubai, Square at JW Marriott Marquis, one of the most iconic hotels in Dubai.
Dubai’s underground nightlife scene is getting a fresh new club.
‘Square’ will open at JW Marriott Marquis on Sheikh Zayed Road, the tallest hotel in the world, on May 21, and hopes to showcase the best of both the local and international scene.
On the club itself, a spokesman said “We are strong and serious here, and about to give a different shape to your nights. Here is the place to lose yourself and forget your concerns. You do not go to SQ to be seen. You go to dance. We say ‘no’ to commercial nonsense and ‘yes’ to the best underground music supplied by solid performers.”
Official information released by the venue is strongly influenced by Berlin’s legendary club culture.
With that in mind, launch night sees Reboot, a German techno DJ described as ‘ both darkly emphatic and dazzlingly polyrhythmic’, take to the decks.
The Noon boss, real name Frank Heinrich, uses classic house, world music, rock and roll, and even jazz in his deep productions, and has packed out world famous venues like Fabric, Cocoon, Womb and D-Edge in the last few years. With almost 100,000 fans on Facebook, he’s also played festivals like Stereosonic, Electric Zoo, Zouk, Creamfields and the Winter Music Conference. His debut album, ‘Shunyata’ was an instant hit, as have been tracks ‘Be Tougher’ and ‘Caminando’.
Square’s launch comes at a time when Dubai’s underground scene is also flourishing, thanks in part to the support offered it by our friends at Hype, as well as the ambitions of a generation keen to stamp their own home-grown authority on the landscape.
No official images have been released of the venue, yet, but the pictures on Square’s official Facebook (above) certainly suggest a dark and moody evening awaits.
