Five things to do in Dubai this week
From new cinemas to R&B stars and garden yoga, here are some great things happening in Dubai over the next few days (keep yourself busy so that the weekend comes around again quickly).
Sunday 24
1. Pair grape with chocolate
Oenophiles that also happen to be chocolate lovers will adore this one – excellent Italian eatery Solo does a grape and chocolate pairing every Sunday night (you get four handcrafted chocolates matched with four glasses). The sommelier here is Marina Diaz, and she is incredibly knowledgeable so make sure to ask her to explain the reasoning behind the matches.
Solo, Raffles Dubai, Oud Metha. Dhs140, 7pm onwards every Sunday. More info on website.
2. Stretch and ‘om’ under the moon
Set in the gorgeous gardens at Al Barari, yoga teacher Abbey Bates is hosting a full moon yoga class tonight. The energising Vinyasa Flow class will finish off with a meditation, and afterwards everyone will walk to The Farm for a cup of Fruit of the Forest tea. How Zen.
Showcase Gardens, Al Barari (park at Heart & Soul). Dhs100 (includes tea at The Farm). 7pm to 8pm. Register here.
Monday 25
3. Swing to the music of the early 1900s
Swing sextet The Swing Revue are playing at The Fridge on Monday night – so if you fancy Lindy Hopping around the room to tunes from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, this is a night for you. Here’s an example of their catchy work:
The Fridge, Al Serkal Ave, Al Quoz. Dhs50, from 7.30pm. More info on Facebook.
Tuesday 26
4. Check out a new cinema
Residents of Al Warqa’a, International City and surrounding areas can now go to the movies in their ‘hood, as Novo Cinemas has just launched a 12-screen, 1,800 seat complex at Nakheel’s new Dragon Mart 2 mall. So next time you need to pick up some kitchen tiles, plumbing equipment etc, you can catch a flick too.
Dragon Mart 2, Hatta-Oman Highway. More info on website.
Wednesday 27
5. See one of R&B’s fastest rising stars live
One of R&B’s strongest voices, August Alsina won Best New Artist and the Viewer’s Choice Award at the 2015 BET Awards – and he’s returning to Dubai for a set on Wednesday night. The New Orleans native will be at Cavalli Club to dish up his soulful, intelligent and thoughtful lyrics.
Cavalli Club, Fairmont Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, free entry before 11pm, table reservations only after 11pm, 9.30pm to 3am. More info on Facebook.
