These road developments are set to cut Dubai traffic time dramatically and the project is 80% complete

Dubai road developments continues, and one of the city’s biggest road projects has just hit a major milestone.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the new Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project is now 80 per cent complete.

Part of the wider Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, the tunnel stretches 1,650 metres from the end of the Infinity Bridge ramp in Deira to the intersection of Al Khaleej Street and Al Wuheida Street. Once complete, it will feature three lanes in each direction and handle up to 12,000 vehicles per hour both ways.

According to the RTA, the project is designed to support Dubai’s fast-growing population and ease congestion across some of the city’s busiest areas. The wider Al Shindagha Corridor spans 13km across Sheikh Rashid Street, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street, with 15 intersections being upgraded in total.

The route serves several major communities and developments including Dubai Islands, Waterfront Market, Dubai Maritime City and Port Rashid.

And the numbers are impressive. The RTA says the completed corridor is expected to serve around one million people and slash travel times from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes by 2030.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer said the tunnel will provide free-flowing traffic between Infinity Bridge and Deira, while also improving access to Abu Hail, Al Wuheida and Al Mamzar.

But it’s not just about reducing traffic. In true Dubai fashion, the tunnel is also getting an artistic makeover. As part of the Dubai Tunnels initiative, the interior will feature a large-scale mosaic artwork by Emirati artist Maryam Hathboor. Inspired by banknote illustrations, the design will showcase Dubai’s skyline, including the iconic Infinity Bridge.

The RTA also confirmed that works are underway on another major project connecting Bur Dubai and Dubai Islands via a new bridge across Dubai Creek. The bridge will feature four lanes in each direction and include dedicated pedestrian and cycling tracks.

The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of this year.
