15 things to do in Dubai this weekend
Music fests’, Mexican food fiestas, world-class golf, unique yoga classes, car appreciation clubs and more. Here’s your Dubai weekend sorted (have a good one!).
Thursday 2
1. Celebrate Dia de la Candelaria
We love the tacos at La Tablita, and tonight they’re celebrating Dia de la Candelaria: which is all about tamales, and the atole drink (which are both all about corn). There will be live cooking stations, stews, street food and more – and it’s just Dhs180 for all you can eat, and all the atole and Mexican waters you can drink.
La Tablita, Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights, Dubai Healthcare City, Dhs180, from 7pm onwards. Tel: (04) 317 2222. More info on website.
2. Dine on Italian street food
At deli/restaurant Taste of Italy by Heinz Beck tonight you’ll find an Italian Street Food Experience from 7pm to 10pm. What can you expect? A live BBQ, a piadina station, cannolli Siciliani and more.
Galleria Mall, Al Wasl Road, 7pm to 10pm, a la carte prices. Book a table at (04) 343 8292. More info on Facebook.
3. Hit Redfest
At Dubai Media City today and tomorrow you’ll find Redfest DXB, a music fest’ that tonight will feature The Veronicas, G-Eazy, Sean Paul and Daya. On Friday you’ll get to see Demi Lovato, Tove Lo and Mike Posner. Still undecided on whether or not you should go? You can read all about the lineup here.
Media City Ampitheatre, Dubai Media City, from 6pm Thursday February 2 and from 4pm Friday February 3. Buy tickets here.
Friday 3
4. It’s French Pancake Day!
Happy French Pancake Day (there’s a day for everything). To celebrate, Plantation at the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach is putting on some special crêpes this weekend. You’ll get to try beef consommé with sliced herbed crêpes, zucchini and potato pancakes with chicken, tomato and fresh basil and banana crêpes, topped with vanilla ice cream.
Plantation Restaurant & Terrace, Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach, noon to 11.30pm until Saturday, from Dhs35. Tel: (04) 448 4733. More info on website.
5. Meet folk that love cars as much as you do (if you happen to)
Caffeine and Machine are a group dedicated to people who love two things – fine cars and coffee (kind of like Jerry Seinfeld?). They will be at Alserkal Ave from 7.30am to 12.30pm this morning to show off interesting wheels (the historical truck above will be there) while also caffeinating. As the organisers say, “bring your wheels (cars, bikes, trikes, skateboards, push bikes… anything), your cameras and your conversation”.
Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, 7.30am to 12.30pm, free. More info on Facebook.
6. Go to the golf
It’s the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this weekend, and Round One starts this morning at Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course at around 7.30am. Round two is same time Friday, round three Saturday and the final round is on Sunday. Follow Middle East Golf guide Golf Digest ME for updates on the tee, but there’s also plenty of other action on the day – from food trucks to adventure courses and playgrounds for the kids.
Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, from 7.30am daily, until Sunday. Tickets from Dhs75 to Dhs675. More info on website.
7. Visit a wedding fair
Thinking of getting hitched soon? Well, the Emaar Wedding Fair is on this weekend – and it’ll be a chance to explore different wedding vendors and services. In fact, there’s an African zone, an Arabian zone, a South Asian zone and a Western zone. Pictured above is a wedding set up at the Palace Downtown Dubai (not shabby at all).
Burj Park, Downtown Dubai, 2pm to 9pm Friday, 11am to 6pm Saturday. More info on website.
8. Taste the flavours of the Med’
There’s a guest chef at excellent Spanish restaurant Al Hambra this week – from tonight until February 10 Javier Soriano from Jumeirah Port Soller in Mallorca will be in the kitchen. Definitely book a table on the restaurant’s terrace – its one of our favourites in the city.
Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah, from 7pm Friday February 3 to Friday February 10. Tel: (04) 432 3232. More info on website.
9. Listen to an Egyptian legend sing at Dubai Opera
Dubai Opera is definitely proving to be a diverse venue that’s not just about tenors and sopranos: tonight the stage is playing host to Egyptian singer Amr Diab, otherwise known as the best-selling Arabic-language singer of all time. What a legend.
Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, 10pm to 1am, available tickets from Dhs800. Buy tickets here.
10. See a DJ that’s more than a flash in the pan
When Hot Since 82 came to Dubai almost exactly a year ago, he was one of the biggest new names on the scene. Now, 12 months later, he is established as a truly global DJ who never steps off the international club merry-go-round. His label Knee Deep In Sound has provided some of 2016’s club bomb highlights, namely his own release from July titled Yourself. Should be a banger.
Provocateur, Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeirah, Dubai, 11pm to 3am, free guestlist. More info on Facebook.
Saturday 4
11. Look out for the Dubai Tour cyclists
Today is the last day of the Dubai Tour, and the professional cyclists will be whizzing all around the city today: the road closures are frustrating, but seeing the hundreds-strong pack of athletes whizzing past is pretty cool. It starts around 12.35pm, running down Umm Suqeim Street before turning into Al Quoz and moving into Mirdif and Deira. At around 2.49pm it will reach Union House and the flag, and will then traverse the length of Jumeirah Beach Road before turning onto Al Wasl near the Burj Al Arab (it will reach Al Wasl around 3.14pm). It ends at City Walk. For a map and more on their route today, head to our story that details the road closures.
Various locations around Dubai and the UAE, ends today at City Walk, free to spectate. More info on website.
12. Try mother and daughter yoga
Any mums keen to foster mutual respect and positive communication between themselves and their daughters should sign up to the Mother-Daughter yoga session being held by Carla Julian this weekend. It’s suitable for children aged 3 to 10.
Zoga Yoga, Downtown Dubai, 4pm to 5pm, Dhs120 per duo (Dhs50 for any additional children). Book at info@zoga.ae. Tel: (04) 276 7657. More info on Facebook.
13. Go to an afternoon tea (with a twist)
This Saturday the W Dubai at Al Habtoor City is putting on a poolside afternoon tea from 1pm to 4pm that will then become a poolside par-tea, get it? From 1pm to 4pm the afternoon tea is Dhs375, while a package for just drinks (which includes cocktails, beer, wines and more) is Dhs275. The par-tea is then 4pm to 9pm, and is open to everyone with no entrance fee. It’s also two-for-one drinks for Face card holders.
W Dubai, Al Habtoor City, Sheikh Zayed Road, 1pm to 9pm. Tel: (04) 436 6666. More info on Facebook.
14. Dine in the sky
Who wouldn’t want to eat scrambled eggs while watching the world go by? Sit back, get strapped in, and be hoisted 50m above Dubai Marina for an experience you’ll never forget. You can opt for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. We tried it recently: read more about our experience here.
Dinner in the Sky UAE, Mina Seyahi, Al Sufouh Road, Al Seyahi Street, Dubai, weekdays 2.40pm until 11.10pm and weekends from 11.50am until 12.35am. Tel: (02) 5558178. dinnerinthesky.ae.
15. Learn the story behind Krumping
This interesting workshop will teach its participants about the history and art of Krump – a danceform that was born in Los Angeles, the stomps, pops and swings allowing the dancers to let out frustrations about the world around them.
Auditorium of Alliance Francaise, Oud Metha, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Dhs100. Register at mediatheque.gestion@afdubai.org. More info on website.
