A second UAE Food Bank has opened in Dubai for World Food Day

Another good deed for the Year of Giving…

October 16 marks World Food Day, an annual day of action dedicated to tackling world hunger.

But sometimes the best way to solve global problems is by starting at home. And that’s exactly what Dubai has done, choosing today to launch the second branch of the UAE Food Bank.

In January, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, launched the first UAE Food Bank, which distributes otherwise wasted food to those in need at both a local and regional level. Since opening in April in Al Quoz, the warehouse has distributed more than 136 tonnes of food.

It’s clear there’s a huge demand for the service. Which is why it’s great news that there’s now another Food Bank, located in Al Bada, next to the Canadian University.

Just like the Al Quoz branch, the new Food Bank will collect surplus packaged and canned food from nearby supermarkets and food establishments, and give it to charity associations to distribute to the needy. As part of the launch on Monday, more than 1000 labourers from nearby construction sites were given free food packages.

A total of 30 Food Banks are planned to open across the UAE.

“Please find a way to get involved”

HRH Princess Haya, the chair of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City, also took to Instagram on Monday to draw attention to the important cause.

Today, on World Food Day, we need to remember that ending hunger would help solve so many of the world’s most pressing problems — forced economic migration by the poor, diseases and stunting among children, deaths among pregnant women. You can reach out to the hungry through the Red Crescent, Red Cross, and charity organisations such as Tkiyet Um Ali on the local level, as well as the World Food Programme, FAO, and MSF — there are so many agencies that do wonderful work. Please find a way to get involved with these organisations to help the poor and hungry people they serve. #worldfoodday #ZeroHunger
