We’re trading pool days for movie days this summer, and there’s SO many to look forward to…

As we all know, it can get a little toasty in the UAE during the summer months, and when it’s too hot for pool days, that leaves us in search of indoor activities to escape the scorching heat.

Luckily, there’s a slew of great movies releases coming this summer to get you excited – everything from animated films to horror flicks to jam-packed action movies to belly-aching comedies.

So if you were looking for a way to while away the day, here are 10 great movies releasing in cinemas this summer, sorted by release date (note: subject to change, so check ahead before planning).

Aladdin

Release date: May 23, 2019

The hotly anticipated remake of Disney’s much-loved 1992 animated classic Aladdin is releasing this May. It follows the story of Aladdin, who spends most of his life living on the streets. He meets power-hungry Grand Vizier who convinces him to help steal a magic lamp that has the powers to make their deepest wishes come true.

Godzilla: King of the monsters

Release date: 30 May, 2019

Following the global success of Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, this new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency, Monarch, as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters (including the mighty Godzilla) who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis – the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species (thought to be mere myths) rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum

Release date: June 2019 (Date TBA)

Following part 2 of the John Wick series, super-assassin John Wick finds himself stripped of the organization’s protective services and is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin’s guild. With a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.

Child’s Play

Release date: June 2019 (TBA)

Don’t let the title fool you – this is no movie you want the kids to see. This upcoming American slasher film is a remake of the 1988 film of the same name, and follows a similar plot featuring a doll named Chucky. Karen gifts her son Andy a toy doll, though neither are aware of its evil nature, or the devastation its set to cause.

Dark Phoenix

Release date: June 5, 2019

This Marvel movie will see X-Men facing one of their own – former team member Jean Grey, who has turned into a formidable and powerful foe. After being hit by a mysterious cosmic force in space during a rescue mission, she becomes infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Her increasing power makes her spiral out of control, forcing her to hurt the people she loves the most. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

Men in Black International

The Men (ahem, and women) in Black have always protected the earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest and most global threat to date –  a mole in the Men in Black organization.

Toy Story 4

Release date: June 21

The adventure continues for Woody, Buzz and the gang in the next installment of the Toy Story series. Toy Story 4 will see the return of Little Bo Beep and a new toy named Forky (actually a spork) created by Bonnie, the toy’s new owner after Andy. The gang embarks on a road trip with Bonnie and her family, which turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour (these guys really need to learn to put on their seatbelts huh?) leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever. Our friendly neighborhood superhero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation, but Peter Parker’s plan to leave heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent

 The Lion King

We here at What’s On can’t wait for this one to come out and we’re sure we aren’t the only ones. The ‘live action’ version of The Lion King is one of the most anticipated Disney remakes of all time. For those of you who haven’t seen the 1994 Disney animated film – the story follows young lion cub, Simba who is next in line for the throne after his father, Mufasa. After the murder of Mufasa by Simba’s jealous and throne hungry Uncle Scar the young lion prince flees his kingdom, only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Bickering since movie number 7 (Furious 7) in the franchise, Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain, “Black Superman” threatens the future of humanity.
