We all know living in Dubai doesn’t come cheap, and it seems even spending the night in the city requires deep pockets.

A new report shows that Dubai is the second-most expensive city in the world for tourists to stay in, with hotel rooms costing an average Dhs1,003 per night.

Only Geneva, in Switzerland, where a night in a hotel costs an average Dhs1,131 was more expensive, according to the report from Bloomberg. An overnight stay in New York, London, Paris or Sydney would, on average, cost less than one in Dubai.

Dubai’s ranking is perhaps unsurprising given the huge number of five-star hotels in the city, which is home to the world famous Burj Al Arab and Atlantis hotels, as well as new luxury resorts like the Waldorf Astoria and Anantara on the Palm.

If that weren’t enough fluffy bathrobes and crisp linens, more opulent accommodation is en route to Dubai in the shape of new developments from the Four Seasons, W Hotels, and Palazzo Versace.

The Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) told The National it was working with partners to boost the numbers of three and four-star hotels in the city, to appeal to tourists on a budget.

In the meantime, eye-watering room rates don’t seem to be deterring holidaymakers from jetting in in their droves – hotels in the city welcomed more than 11 million guests last year.

Tourist numbers are expected to climb even further in the lead up to Expo 2020.
