From this Friday a 7km section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will double in width – details here.

As of Friday February 26, a 7km section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will double in size, going from three lanes in each direction to six lanes – the new 12-lane highway will run from Al Maktoum International Airport to the Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road roundabout (which borders Dubai Investment Park).

The two yellow dots below show the approximate points at which the opening-this-Friday road widening will run between:

This new-and-improved road is part of a wider project that will cover the area from Arabian Ranches to ‘Trucks Road’. The whole project is 60 per cent complete, and will be entirely finished in the last quarter of 2016.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of RTA about the overall project will “result in a smooth traffic flow for vehicles coming from Al Yalayis Road heading east towards the Dubai Investment Park, and west towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Jebel Ali Free Zone.

“It will also provide a smooth flow of traffic from the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to the north and south, from and to Abu Dhabi.”

Al Tayer has said that traffic diversions have been planned for the construction period, and that these diversions have the same number of lanes as the current roads, so shouldn’t cause much traffic disruption – the main diversion will be open by early April.

HERE’S WHAT THE WHOLE PROJECT INVOLVES

project-overviewThe breadth of the project

– The larger project will include the construction of a Service Road on both sides of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. This will run from near Dubai Investment Park up to the junction of Al Khail and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (near City Centre Meaisem).

– Al Houdh roundabout will be upgraded into a free flyover so that the area can eventually accommodate the track for Etihad Rail (this rail will link Abu Dhabi to the Saudi border at Ghweifat and the Omani border at Al Ain).

– There will also be construction of a flyover linking Hessa Road, Al Khail Road and the Al Barsha Area with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.
