The search has begun for one lucky designer to have their designs seen by a global audience…

A competition has been launched for fashion designers across the UAE to design the Expo 2020 uniforms.

The uniforms will be worn by more than 30,000 Expo 2020 volunteers and staff every day for the six-month event, which kicks off in just over two years on October 20 2020.

The brief given to designers outlines that the uniforms should reflect Expo’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, as well as celebrating the rich heritage of the UAE. The uniforms must also be practical, weather appropriate, easily identifiable and modest.

In alignment with one of Expo 2020’s three sub-themes, Sustainability, designs using recycled or organic fabrics, zero waste concepts, or which take into account sustainable practices and innovations throughout the supply chain will be weighed more favourably.

The selected designers have already been briefed, and entries will be judged by a committee of senior members of the Expo 2020 team.

Three finalists will be selected by September 30 of this year, and will all be asked to create samples of the full line with a budget of Dhs50,000. The design should feature a top, bottom, outer jacket, hat, bag, tie, scarf, kandora and ghitra, abaya and shayla, and an Expo 2020 accessory.

The winning designs will be announced later this year.

Rita Penteado, Vice President of HR, workforce and volunteers at Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “This competition is a valuable opportunity for designers in the UAE to showcase their talents to millions of people from across the globe. We are looking for a uniform that embodies the Emirati character and will represent the UAE on the world stage. It should also create a sense of pride and unity when worn by our volunteers and staff.”

We can’t wait to see the designs….
