Cloudy with a chance of…

Not meatballs, unfortunately (as much as we’d love that). The weather has been making several U-turns recently, and the latest one is heavy rain and hail in parts of the UAE this past weekend. Saturday afternoon, the 21st of October 2023, saw heavy rain with hail in some of the eastern emirates like Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, as well as Al Ain.

Light rain was also recorded over the Masafi region in Ras Al Khaimah, with light to moderate showers in parts of Fujairah eventually picking up pace over the course of the evening. Heavy rain also lashed the East of Al Ain and other parts of the city followed by heavier showers accompanied by hail and throughout the evening.

On Sunday, October 23, the rain returned, this time to many parts of Sharjah. Having started off as light showers, it picked up pace with hail over the evening. Parts of Ras Al Khaimah were once again hit with rain and hail, and regions of the Al Watan Road passing through Hatta, and neighbouring Oman experienced similar weather conditions.

The National Centre of Meteorology issues several warnings on their social media handles, advising motorists to stay safe on the roads in affected areas. Drivers were instructed to drive only when necessary, turn on low-beam headlights when visibility is reduced and keep up to date with the forecasts via official channels. They were also asked to stay away from areas of flash flooding and landslides in some of the Eastern regions heavily affected.

The weather wizards predict…

Although this time of year doesn’t see much rain in the UAE, light to moderate rain is expected in the country over the next four days, the NMC predicts. The rainy weather conditions may continue to persist due to the effects of a tropical cyclone in the Southwest of the Arabian Sea, which has been the catalyst of the flow of moisture that creates cumulus clouds accompanied by rain over the eastern and southern regions.

All in all, carrying an umbrella when you venture outside this week may be handy.

Stay safe on the roads, everyone!
