Kry Wolf are headlining at Superheroes this weekend. Who are they? Bill Francis and Lewis Darvill, two lads from Portsmouth in the UK, who are considered serious players on the underground club scene. They started out just messing around with bootlegs and throwing underground parties around the south coast of England. Now they’re playing everywhere from London’s fabled Fabric to Bestival and hosting boat parties at Croatia’s Hideout Festival.

What’s behind the name? Actually, the boys were struggling to come up with a name and it was Lewis’ Mum who suggested Cry Wolf. Lewis and Bill loved it but decided to drop the C for a K in homage to Kraftwerk.

What style do they play? Ah, the lads are doing everything they can to prevent themselves being pigeon-holed into one genre, and their productions range from house, garage and tech to funky and experimental.

“We both have a love for house of all varieties, hip hop and also garage amongst other styles, so we’re taking influences from a lot of different sounds when we make music,” says Bill.

Lewis adds: “We have too many influences to mention – anyone from Nile Rodgers to DJ Funk, to SL2. The bass house thing is definitely where we feel most comfortable at the moment, but we’re always playing around with other ideas and various sounds.”

What productions got them noticed, then? Opening their SoundCloud account with a blissful bootleg of The Streets’ Has It Come To This, they displayed their ability to branch out with the rough and ready grime-leaning tune Wonga, while U Like, taken from the Nightmode EP, saw them step into piano house territory. And then there was the terrifying Turbosteppa collaboration with Dirtybird Records maestro Claude VonStroke.

Anything else we should know? Yes, not content with playing out and producing tracks, Lewis and Bill also run their record label Sounds Of Sumo, which, along with their own material, has released output from Melé, Canblaster and Submerse. Late in 2012, they teamed up with fellow south coast lad Shadow Child to create another label called Food Music, describing it at the time as “a home for a new wave of house, bass and forward-thinking creations”. As well as putting out music from its lynchpins, the now burgeoning label boasts releases from Hannah Wants, Tom Flynn, Zinc, Sacha Robotti and more.

With such diversity, they must have picked up a few high-profile fans along the way? Absolutely. Support has been rolling in from all corners – namely Skream, Mosca, Mary Anne Hobbs, A-Trak, Sub Focus and Buraka Som Sistema to name a few.
