But only for ‘non-dangerous’ violations…

In a move designed to encourage Dubai’s motorists to keep a squeaky-clean driving record, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai announced that drivers who commit non-dangerous traffic violations will no longer need to worry about having their vehicles confiscated.

The new rule on traffic offences will go into effect immediately and also benefits current offenders whose vehicles will be released if they have already completed half of the designated confiscation period.

It is important to note that this only applies to non-dangerous violations.

Those caught driving recklessly, illegally racing, running a red light, speeding and endangering the lives of pedestrians, and causing damage to other vehicles will be held accountable to the full force of the law and risk confiscation of their vehicle.

This lenient gesture is designed to fall in line with the Year of Giving initiative that was announced by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, late last year.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police noted that the relaxing of the law should help prevent serious accidents and violations from motorists who do not have a track record.

The Police Chief then went on to, rightly, remind motorists that respect for traffic rules is one of the most important features of civilised societies.
