Construction set to begin on Dubai Metro Blue Line this year
Here’s everything we know about the mega project…
In November 2023, plans for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, initially proposed in 2006, were revitalised. Now, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has officially announced that work on this long-awaited metro extension is scheduled to kick off in 2024.
The Dhs18 billion project will span 30km, with 15.5km running underground and 14.5km above ground. The Blue Line will feature 14 stations including three interchange stations and will connect the existing Red and Green lines.
Expected to be completed by 2029, the Blue Line will comprise of two main routes extending from the Red and Green lines and offering a direct link between Dubai International Airport (DXB). The new stations include Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Mirdif City Centre, Ras al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai International City, Al Warqa’a, Academic City, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.

“2024 is set to mark the commencement of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project, which will stretch over a total of 30 km, with 15.5 km running underground and 14.5 km above ground,” said HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.
“The project encompasses 14 stations including 3 interchange stations, connecting key areas in Dubai to cope with the projected demographic growth of surrounding areas to one million people as per the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040.”
This rail development supports the larger remit of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which in addition to rejuvenating and consolidating facilities in key Dubai communities, also includes plans for the city’s transport system.
The plan aims to place 55 per cent of the population within 800 meters of a main public transport station. And to promote and facilitate mass transit use, walking, cycling as well as more flexible means of transportation.
