What’s On details Red Bull Sultan of the Desert, a new adventure race in the UAE taking place at Wadi Adventure and Jabal Hafeet. Find out how to sign up.
The folks at Red Bull do not do things by halves, and their latest announcement proves they haven’t lost their touch.
After all, this is the company that once challenged motorcyclist Robbie Maddison to jump his bike all the way to the top of a ten-storey building, and then jump back down again onto a ramp. Oh, and they also had skydiver and base jumper Felix Baumgartner freefall from the edge of space – 128,000 feet above the earth. Which is why we’re very excited to see what they have in store for their latest venture, right here in the UAE.
The Red Bull Sultan of the Desert bills itself as the most challenging multi-discipline race in the region and it’s easy to see why.
Starting in Al Ain at the foot of Jabal Hafeet, the highest peak in the country, and concluding in outdoor activity park Wadi Adventure, this relay race will see teams of three fighting it out across three disciplines: running, mountain biking and kayaking.
If you’re thinking about taking on the run or the bike route, be prepared for some seriously tough terrain – each leg consists of 15km of rugged ground and hilly trails. Meanwhile, the kayaking will take place across 12km of Al Mubazzarah lake and Wadi Adventure’s challenging whitewater rafting channels. This is one race that definitely doesn’t fall under the category of ‘fun run’. But the winning team will earn some serious bragging rights and (we assume) get to introduce themselves as ‘Sultans of the Desert’ forever.
This isn’t the first extreme adventure race to take place in Al Ain. The city also regularly hosts the Wadi Adventure Race – a challenging obstacle course that involves running, jumping, crawling and climbing your way to the finish line alongside up to 600 other competitors.
