Abu Dhabi Police have taken the opportunity to remind drivers and pedestrians of the rules…

We could all use a kind reminder of the road rules every now and then, to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Rules regarding zebra crossings have been shared by Abu Dhabi Police to remind drivers and pedestrians to stay safe in the UAE.

Not following these rules could land residents a hefty fine, so it’s important to take note. According to the UAE traffic law, motorists face a Dh500 fine and six black points for not giving way to pedestrians when they reach a zebra crossing.

Pedestrians aren’t exempt from fines either: they must only cross roads in places that are allocated for crossing. Jaywalking leaves people susceptible to a Dhs400 fine, of which Abu Dhabi Police issued 50,000 in 2017.

Did you know? If the car beside you has already stopped for a pedestrian, you must also stop. The rules state you should give way for pedestrians and if there’s traffic behind you, turn on your hazard lights to give warning.

At a zebra crossing pedestrians always have right of way, so think about when you’re the one on foot and trying to escape the humidity and get inside as soon as possible. Slow down and stop as soon as you reach the yield sign.

If you’re crossing the road, stop reading What’s On on your phone and focus. Make sure the cars have stopped and stay alert, to avoid a fine you must ensure to never cross when there’s a red man.

Stay safe out there….
