These look flippin’ good…

Make celebrating Pancake Day in Dubai on March 1 part of your great things to do in the city this week.

Few breakfast items transcend the sum of their parts quite like the humble dish. Through some magical feat of morning alchemy, the simple combination of eggs, powder, and sugar creates a steaming platter that’s both fluffy and crispy, sweet and savoury, and capable of soaking up a seemingly infinite quantity of syrup. To salute this breakfast of champions, we’ve compiled a short stack of where you can celebrate Pancake Day in Dubai.

Here are nine spots where you can celebrate Pancake Day in Dubai

Kcal

If you’re on a health kick or you’ve got specific dietary requirements, you can’t go wrong with Kcal. Gluten and dairy-free and containing no sugar, its blueberry and banana pancakes (Dhs30) retain a fluffy and moist consistency and give you a hint of sweetness without the guilt. The chefs have got creative when it comes to the substitutions – they use almond flour instead of white flour, coconut oil instead of butter and the berry sauce is sweetened naturally with strawberry and honey.

Kcal, Motor City, First Floor, Control Tower, Mon to Sun 7am to 11pm. Tel: (600) 595955 , @thekcallife

Harrie’s Pancakes

Founded in the small town of Graskop, South Africa in 1986, and famous for delicious savoury pancakes, Harrie’s recently opened in Dubai Marina. Imagine a thick crepe-style pancake filled with the likes of butter chicken or savoury mince and cheddar cheese (Dhs42). The original pancake recipe was passed on to founder Harrie by an elderly lady living in Graskop, so it tastes just like grandma’s cooking.

Harrie’s Pancakes, Bay Central Towers, Shop 5, Dubai Marina Walk, Sun to Mon 8am to 6pm and Tue to Sat 8am to 8pm. Tel (0)54 458 0819. @harries_pancakes_dubai

The Sum of Us

Now these are two words we are happy to see together: cheesecake and pancakes (Dhs65). These American-style pancakes are brought to life by a topping made from cream cheese, icing sugar, whipped cream, blueberry syrup, lemon zest and a hint of salt, and are served with a berry compote and ginger-hazelnut crumb. Breakfast and dessert in one? Yes please.

The Sum of Us, Ground Floor, Burj Al Salam, 6th Street, Dubai, Mon to Sun 8am to 10pm. Tel: (0)56 445 7526. @_thesumofus_

Served with gooey Maine blueberries, banana and walnuts, or huge chocolate chunks, its pancakes (Dhs55) are fluffy, golden brown, and served with melted maple butter.

Publique

Anyone for savoury? If your sweet tooth needs a rest, try Publique’s traditional French crepe selection. L’alpine (Dhs44) is filled with smoked turkey, emmental cheese and a fried egg. La Savoyarde (Dhs48) is another joy on the palate, filled with new potatoes, veal bacon and Reblochon cheese. These are ideal for cosy winter evenings and pretending you’re apres-ski. There’s also the option to ‘make your own’ and of course, there’s loads of sweet
toppings too.

Publique, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Mon to Sun 12pm to 2am. Tel: (0)4 430 8550. @publiquedubai

Denny’s

Have a break, have a…pancake? We love Denny’s for its comforting American classics and this new addition to the menu at just Dhs29 is no exception. A classic buttermilk pancake is filled with KitKat spread, topped with whipped cream and finished with a sprinkling of crushed chocolate pieces. This is a super indulgent choice for a cheat day and one that the kids will love.

Denny’s, Sheikh Zayed Road (opposite Times Square Mall), Mon to Sun 8am to 3am. Tel (0)4 321 2100. @dennys_me

Yamanote

This cute Japanese bakery certainly knows how to make a light-as-a-feather pancake. Try the traditional Fuwa Fuwa (Dhs42), which translates to ‘fluffy fluffy’ and is served with mixed berries, Chantilly cream and honey or syrup. They use a classic batter mix but also add vanilla, lime juice and a secret ingredient. The chef tells us they achieve the souffle style by mixing at various speeds with precision, care, and ensuring the final batter is super airy.

Yamanote Atelier, Dubai Mall, weekdays 10am to 12am, weekends 10am to 1am. Tel: (0)4 380 7891. @yamanoteatelier

Bread Street Kitchen & Bar

Keep things simple and classy with the lemon-and-sugar-dusted pancakes served with a tangy lemon sorbet, go big with the red velvet pancakes served with seasonal berries and vanilla ice cream, or try the indulgent chocolate pancakes, layered with ice cream, brownie and sauce. All pancakes cost Dhs50.
