New Dubai tint-proof cameras catch drivers using two phones, and reading a newspaper
You can tint but you can’t hide…
A new generation of cameras have their eyes on Dubai motorists. These smart traffic technologies are looking out for drivers violating a specific set of road rules, including not wearing seat belts, using mobiles phone, and other distracting activities that could lead to an accident.
What’s even more impressive, is that they can do all this, even if you’ve got your windows tinted.
Since they’ve been active – the cameras have already captured some truly shocking examples of dangerous driving.
In a horrifying case of conferencing gone wrong, Dubai Police have shared details on one instance where a driver was caught using two phones at the same time.
Another example shared, recounts how a camera captured a motorist reading a newspaper. Whilst they were driving. Completely obscuring their view. We’ve all had the urge to finish a crossword before, but this one ended up with a hefty “Two Across, four letters, safe-adequate” (FINE).
And it’s not just financial penalties these distracted drivers face, recent amendments to Decree No. (30) 2023 allow for a 30-day impoundment for drivers caught using mobile phones or engaging in other focus-shifting behaviour behind the wheel.
Talking about a new Safe Road for Everyone campaign, Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police said “The use of these technologies supports Dubai’s objective of becoming a global leader in traffic safety and aligns with the strategic goal of reducing road accident fatalities.”
And that “This initiative also aims to foster a culture of responsible driving across Dubai.”
