Here at What’s On, we’re a film-loving bunch, so when we heard that an altogether new cinema experience would involve standing inside a giant dome while looking up at a 360-degree screen that covers the ceilings – we had to check it out.

The Dome BoxYou can’t miss The Dome Box on Al Wasl road.

The Dome Box is the brainchild of development company Meraas, whose cool outdoor shopping malls have wowed residents and tourists in Dubai since they opened last year. “Boxpark is particularly unique to Dubai and we wanted an entertainment outlet that was equally special,” said Meraas manager Jean Marc Bled at our sneak preview earlier last week.

The Dome Box is certainly that. As you walk through the foyer, around the white giant dome that’s built in the centre, giant bronzed cogs spin overhead and a plasma screen TV welcomes guests to the show.

Don’t expect blockbuster movies, or independent indie films here; The Dome Box is more of a theme park attraction, screening family-friendly animated movies that focus on nature, science and the environment.

Showcased on a superb 360-degree screen, you’ll find yourself journeying through space or deep into nature. Each movie lasts between 10 and 30 minutes with movie screenings changing every half an hour. It’s great for the little ones and a unique experience for grown-ups.
