A three-day weekend event will be held this month to introduce Dubai to an exciting new creative design hub.
The Dubai Design District – known as d3 – is a new neighbourhood being built entirely from scratch, in the shadows of Downtown Dubai. When complete, it will be a mix office space, major brand flagship stores and small boutiques with galleries, workshops and artists’ studios.
Taking place from April 2 to 4, Meet d3 will showcase the ‘Shoreditch of Dubai’ – as it is affectionately being described – featuring a cool mix of local, regional and international designers, artists, musicians, concept retailers and unique dining experiences. It will also feature John Newman, the British singer responsible for ‘Love Me Again’.
“Meet d3’ will harness the talents and abilities of the community to celebrate creativity in the region. Programming across the three day event includes some of the most dynamic and original creative talents from across both the UAE and beyond, embodying the notions of convergence and co-collaboration around design, art, fashion, dining experience and entertainment – many of whom will now call d3 home,” they say.
Late last year, the area around the first stages of d3 was turned into a hive of activity for the region’s sub-culture. The SoleDXB weekender offered an insight into the sort of crowd one can expect to permanently take up residence at the new project. Hailed as ‘a living, breathing, interactive exchange of ideas for the city’s community of counter-culture creators, like-minded fashionistas, sneaker freaks and off-the-wall art lovers’, it is hoped Meet d3 proves equally as popular with those who attended.
There will be no shortage of great designers and creatives – both internationally renowned and emerging talents – to check out at Meet d3. Here’s a few that should be on your ‘don’t miss’ list…
As an insight into the world of design and technology, threeASFOUR from New York – known for dressing celebrities such as Bjork and Yoko Ono – creates an immersive multimedia presentation of their latest collection.
Meanwhile, artist and designer Ebon Heath will be fitting his unique typographic installation while international lighting brand Lasvit will, for the first time in the region, undertake glass-blowing workshops to give visitors a truly sensorial introduction to the process of transforming raw glass into design lighting.
Away from design and art, the fashion hub packs a punch with the launch of a cool collaborative experimental project that ambitiously plans to create the Dubai’s first 3D printed dress, at the Not Just A Label retail space.
The music roster contains local, regional and international musicians while a carefully curated food hub will showcase pop-up offerings from some of Dubai’s leading independent restaurants and cafes.
