Bob Marley’s partners in crime The Wailers have announced a special one-off performance of their iconic album ‘Legend’ at The Irish Village.

The show on May 21 will see the reggae act play the record in its entirety on the outdoor stage at the popular venue in Garhoud.

Formed almost 50 years ago by Marley alongside Bunny Walker, Peter Tosh and the Barrett Brothers (Carlton and Aston), the Jamaican outfit are responsible for some of the best loved reggae music to ever come out of the country.

Hits like ‘No Woman, No Cry’, ‘Buffalo Soldier’, ‘I Shot The Sheriff’ and ‘Jamming’ have helped keep ‘Legend’ in the American charts for 324 non-consecutive weeks, the fourth longest run ever, since its release in 1984. Essentially a collection of singles released by the band in the two decades prior, it is the best-selling genre album ever and was ranked 46 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

Other instantly hits from the album include ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘Get Up, Stand Up’, ‘Redemption Song’ and ‘Could You Be Loved’. All tracks come from albums written by Marley, who died in 1981, with the help of Vincent Ford, Noel Williams, Tosh and Curtis Mayfield, such as ‘Kaya’ (1978), ‘Uprising’ (1980), ‘Exodus’ (1977), ‘Confrontation’ (1983), ‘Burnin” (1973), and ‘Catch A Fire’ (1973).

Today, the band continues to tour under the banner of promoting peace, love and equality, led by founding member Aston Barrett, who was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Bass Player magazine.

“Our music is the magic,” says the man known as Family Man, “the oxygen of the people. It’s the message of roots, culture and reality, meant to spread peace and love to all.”

Tickets for the show are priced at Dhs130 and available from the venue.
