Sadly the cards can’t be recharged with solar power…

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have made it easier for customers to recharge their nol card with the addition of 100 new stations. RTA announced that the decision for the machines to run on solar power was to help in their efforts to be more sustainable.

nol cards are used to pay for RTA services in Dubai such as the metro, tram, water buses, paid parking zones and even taxis. Cards need a minimum balance of Dhs7.50 at all times, so it’s important to have plenty of recharging stations around.

According to RTA, 1,025,294 clients have used nol card recharging machines already in 2019. A statement said that the installation of these machines will shorten the time taken in nol card top-ups. Customers can also use their credit cards to top-up nol cards online through RTA’s website and activate the credit through the existing machines.

Customers can recharge their cards at any of the 178 new solar-powered machines, which have been installed in areas such as Al Qusais, International City, Mall of the Emirates, Sahara Centre at bus stops and other regularly frequented spots.

“The installation of 100 solar-powered nol card recharging machines across Dubai is part of RTA’s strategy to provide alternative renewable energy sources. It will help in realising RTA’s objective of reducing power consumption in accordance with Dubai Supreme Council of Energy strategy,” said Khalid Al Awadi, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency.
