Our pick of the movies out in Dubai cinemas this week is X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest superhero blockbuster

Here are all the new flicks you’ll be able to go see from today…

(And here are 15 other things to do this weekend.)

X MEN: APOCALYPSE

In X-Men: Apocalypse, the follow-up to X-Men:Days of Future Past, our lycra clad mutant heroes have to face their greatest foe yet. The cheerily named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac, looking a LOT less handsome than he did in Star Wars: The Force Awakens) is an all-powerful being, hellbent on taking back the earth from humankind, with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) as his right hand man. It’s up to Professor X (James McEvoy) along with a team that includes Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Jean Grey (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) to save the day.

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR

Like the award-winning Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Our Kind of Traitor is another film based on a John Le Carre novel. This espionage thriller sees Ewan McGregor (who appears to have stopped aging) as Perry, an unassuming academic, who ends up embroiled with the Russian mafia. As you do. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as the mob boss Dima, who wants to negotiate with MI5 agent Hector (Damian Lewis), but will only agree to his terms if Perry is the one to broker the deal.

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

Jane Austen fans, rejoice – Love and Friendship is the first adaptation to hit the big screen since the underwhelming Pride and Prejudice in 2005. It’s one of Austen’s lesser known works, but the cast is pure A-list, with Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Fry on the rota’. Beckinsale plays the charming, scheming Lady Susan Vernon, who’s fallen on hard times and is trying to claw her way out by manipulating her daughter into a profitable marriage match. And possibly herself.
