Hotels across Dubai will be required to comply with 19 new sustainability requirements, according to directives issued by Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

In line with the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST)  initiative, hotels will have 18 months to complete the changes, which cover everything from sustainable management approaches and guest education to energy, food and water. The move hopes to advance sustainability performance across the hospitality sector, and to further support positive change within the industry.

Although the exact 19 sustainability requirements were not disclosed, a statement read that ‘the requirements cover a variety of areas including sustainable management approaches, performance metrics, energy, food and water management plans, guest education, employee training initiatives, the presence of sustainability committees within hotel establishments and corporate social responsibility programmes for local communities.

The regulated guidelines will help promote energy conservation and efficiency, as well as encourage environmentally sustainable practices across the local tourism inventory,” Yousuf Lootah, executive director at DTCM said of the new regulations.

The DST team have already trained 45 per cent of the industry to date on the implementation of the sustainability requirements, with further sessions planned for the next quarter, the statement added.
