Be a sustainable sport!

As you know by now, Dubai will be hosting COP28 – a summit for global leaders and organisations. A few meters away from where all the important conferences will be taking place, you will find probably one of the coolest spots in Expo City Dubai – Extreme Hangout, a zone that’s open to the public.

What’s Extreme Hangout? Well, for those of you who love being active, have you ever considered the impact of being active on the environment? In keeping with the goals of COP28, Extreme Hangout will be a space where we can learn how to be sustainable while remaining active.

It is an important issue that needs to be addressed, and thankfully, Extreme Hangout will showcase just how we can be sustainable in our sporting activities. After all, we all need to be held accountable when it comes to the fight against climate change.

And it goes beyond just skipping the plastic bottles…

Food for thought: Did you know Everest climbers turned the highest point in the world to the highest rubbish dump yard in the world? It wasn’t just litter, but abandoned sports equipment which contributed to the staggering numbers. Now, imagine the environmental impact of huge sporting events around the world from the football World Cup to marathons, and how much it can affect the planet.

This is where Extreme Hangout steps in. The climate action events platform will be at COP28 at Expo City Dubai in an amazing venue in The Green Zone where people can hang out, share ideas, and recharge.

There will be food trucks serving up vegan and vegetarian bites and in the evening, there will be live music, movie premieres, fireside chats and networking drinks. We can expect a number of well-known celebrities and athletes to grace the stage at Extreme Hangouts and we will let you know who they are as soon as they are announced.

The venue opens on December 3 until 12, from 10am to 10pm. The space will be free for visitors to attend, but you have to register here.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry. The events will also be live streamed so you won’t miss out. Each day will focus on a different theme and topic, so pick one (or more) which resonates with you and attend. The topics for the day can be found below.

Extreme Hangout COP28 SCHEDULE

What is COP28?

One of the key principles of Extreme Hangout is ‘There are no stupid questions’. So, if you haven’t heard about Cop28, or if you have and are unsure what is it about, here’s a summary.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international summit that has been taking place since 1995. The summit is held annually unless decided otherwise by the parties. This year is an important year as it is seven years after the initial Paris Agreement (the international treaty on climate change), with seven years to go until 2030.

The conference is where world leaders gather to work together on solutions that tackle the most pressing climate change issues. There are now a total of 199 parties involved in the convention, this is made up of a total of 198 states plus the European Union.

This year marks the 28th annual summit which will be held in the UAE, in Expo City, Dubai from Thursday, November 30 until Tuesday, December 12.

The event will be split into two main zones: The Blue (open to only accredited participants such as the COP parties, world leaders, and observers) and and Green Zones (open to all). At the Green Zone, visitors can expect curated content such as conferences, panels, round tables, entertainment and more.
