What’s On previews new cinema releases this summer in Dubai, including release dates for Transformers, 3D Planes, Planet Of The Apes, Lucy and Hercules.

Yet again, vehicles come to life and good battles evil in the fourth instalment of the Transformers film franchise. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Transformers 4 sees a mechanic and his daughter make a discovery, angering a paranoid government official and wicked bots. Transformers 4 was featured in a Chinese reality TV show where some 70,000 contestants vied for four supporting roles.

First there was Cars. Then there was Planes. And now there’s 3D Planes: Fire And Rescue. Keeping with the theme of vehicles brought to life doing good things, this animated film sees air racer Dusty join forces with rescue helicopters to battle a massive wildfire. Disney is launching a related Nintendo game in autumn.

Cast: Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Douglas Booth
If The Matrix and Fifth Element were to have a child, this film would be it. Focusing on the story of a young human woman who discovers her destiny is to end the reign of the Queen Of The Universe, Jupiter Ascending follows Jupiter Jones from toilet cleaner to world changer.

STEP UP ALL IN (July 31)
Cast: Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Misha Gabriel
In the fifth instalment of the dance flick series, Step Up All In sees favourites from previous films come together in Las Vegas as they dance for dreams and career-defining victory. Prepare your eyeballs for amazing amount of pyrotechnics and even more amazing dance moves. The choreographer is Trish Sie, the genius behind OK Go’s treadmill dance video.

Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li
Everyone knows summertime is sequel season. Proving yet again that if a formula works, don’t change it, The Expendables 3 brings back the familiar cast of weapon-toting heroes and villains. Pitting a new tech-savvy generation of super fighters against classic old-school style, get ready for serious battles and action.

Cast: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell
If you need more apes, more human tension, and more worries about war, then this film is for you. In a world dominated by genetically evolved apes, a band of plucky human survivors led by Gary Oldman would quite like their world back if it’s not too much trouble please. They reach a fragile but short-lived peace, both vying to become Earth’s super species.

What would happen if a super storm were to hit? Into the Storm sees a group of high school students battling a devastating tornado in the ultimate human versus nature. You might recognise Richard Armitage from The Hobbit. He played the leader of the company of dwarves.

THE ROVER (August 7)
Cast: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson
Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson give two powerhouse performances in this gritty tale of violent crime in the Australian outback. The movie comes from David Michod, the director of highly acclaimed and uncompromising crime story Animal Kingdom.

Cast: Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper
Comedy, sci-fi, and space collide in this Marvel Comics film. Telling the story of an American pilot who steals an orb and becomes the object of a manhunt, Guardians Of The Galaxy is filled with cheek and sass. Expect ragtag stars like a fighting raccoon.

SEX TAPE (August 14)
Cast: Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz, Rob Corddry
Capturing the unspoken fears of numerous couples, Sex Tape looks at what happens when a naughty video goes rogue. Jay and Annie have two children and ten years of marriage behind them – so far, so normal. Feeling bored, they decide to make a steamy video, which then gets leaked. Expect a bit of risqué comedy and a lot of laughter.

LUCY (August 14)
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman
A clever story from masterful French director Luc Besson in which the realms of human knowledge are explored – with lots of fighting thrown into the bargain. Johansson plays a girl who is forced into becoming a drug mule. When the drugs in her stomach start leaking into her system, she develops superhuman powers of strength and intelligence.

HERCULES (August 14)
Cast: Dwayne, Johnson, John Hurt, Ian McShane
Hercules focuses on Greek sword-for-hire Hercules – and his biceps. When a king and his beautiful daughter ask for help defeating a warlord, Hercules has no choice but to flex those guns and save the day. In prepping for the role Johnson detailed his workouts on Twitter. It’s safe to say the gym work paid off.
