We’ve all been there, stuck on the other side of Dubai Mall wondering exactly how, and how long it will take to get to that last shop before we fight our way back to the car park. Do we cut through the food court? Or slip down to ground level and try and sneak though around the outside?

Well, two Formula One drivers had a very useful means of overcoming this particular problem, hopping into a recently-launched environmentally friendly car from Renault.

Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldanado, who were in the Middle East for the final race of the F1 season just last month, looked to be enjoying the more leisurely pace of their Twizy as they slip-slid their way around the region’s biggest shopping mall. The Lotus pair pulled some stunts on the famous ice rink, darted through the tunnel at the aquarium, and even reserve parked into an elevator.

Of course, if you’re one of the 35 people to have already bought the rechargeable vehicle in Dubai, you won’t be afforded the same privileges, but the video is certainly a cool way of showing how nifty these little runarounds can be.

Standing at a little over a metre and a half long, and with a speed limit of 80kph, this Dhs69,000 car is certainly not the sort of thing you’d want to take on Sheikh Zayed Road during rush hour, but for that quick whizz to – and around – the shops, there can be few more convenient things on four wheels.

This latest viral video from Dubai comes two months after another F1 team, Red Bull, gave the world a sneak peek inside Yas Mall, some six weeks before its official opening. In footage that has now been seen more than 1.6million times, a driver takes the high-powered racing cars through the main concourse and around the walkways of the giant new complex on Yas Island, a mere stone’s throw from the iconic Yas Marina circuit.
