When it comes to wakeboarding in Dubai, four things matter most: Calm waters, excellent drivers, and a super fly boat with a killer sound system. Here are three of the best.
SEA RIDERS
Owner Amr Gadalla and his team offer wakeboard and wakesurf coaching every day in Dubai Marina and the creek.
Marina Mall, Dubai Marina, Dubai, daily 6am to 6pm, Dhs550 per hour. Tel: (055) 5103739. Metro: Dubai Marina. searidersuae.com
WATERCOOLED
This watersports centre in JBR and Jebel Ali, offers a plethora of water activities but wakeboarding is most popular. The water at the Jebel Ali branch tends to be calmer and less populated with swimmers.
Jebel Ali Golf Resort, Jebel Ali, daily 9am to 6pm, Dhs250 (20 minutes). Tel: (04) 8876771. Taxi: Jebel Ali Golf Resort. watercooleddubai.com
XTREME WAKE
Karim and Ahmed set up Xtreme Wake in 2013 with one goal in mind: to nurture the wakeboarding community in Dubai. Two years later and they have a wakeboard chalet in Ghantoot complete with barbecue facilities and a trampoline, a devoted following of boarders, and a weekly wakecamp.

WAKESURFING
A cross between surfing and wakeboarding, wakesurfing is the new gnarly sport of choice. The driver fills the ballast with water, which weighs the back of the boat down creating a massive, endless wave that riders can surf on. All you need is a board, a shorter rope, good balance and a classic surfer stance.
CABLE WAKEBOARDING
Lets face it, wakeboarding can become a pretty expensive pastime but tucked away in Khalifa City A in Abu Dhabi lies a special watersports centre that allows boarders to get their wakeboarding fill without having to hire a boat. Al Forsan International Sports Resort is home to the region’s first cable park – an overhead cable system built around the banks of freshwater lakes.
These cables pull wakeboarders along at speeds of 35km/h. Inside the compound you’ll find two manmade lakes; the first has a slower pulling system so beginners can practice their technique. The second lake has a faster cable system and includes ramps to try out advanced tricks. Unlike regular wakeboarding, cableboarders start on land and are propelled into the lake when the rope gets taut. Hold on tight while the cable pulls you along the course.
Al Forsan International Sports Resort, Abu Dhabi, May: Sun to Thur 3pm to 10pm, Fri and Sat 10.30am to 10pm, Dhs140 (one hour), Dhs190 (two hours), Dhs300 (all day). Tel: (02) 5568555. alforsan.com
P.S Every November, Al Forsan hosts the world’s best wakeboarders as they compete in the WWA World Championships – the most elite competition in the wake park world. If you want to see cable wakeboarding at its very best, be sure to pencil this one in.
