Avocado on toast in Dubai - five of the best in the city
It’s official, 2015 was the year of the avocado. While we’ve always appreciated their presence on a plate of nachos, once upon a time we wouldn’t necessarily have expected to see them on our breakfast menu. Now, a Friday morning meal without generous amounts of green goodness would leave us bereft.
Fortunately, this hasn’t gone unnoticed by Dubai’s cafés, almost all of which now pander to our avo on toast obsession.
‘You’re all I avo-wanted…’ Here are five of our favourite versions of the ultimate, Insta-ready breakfast:
1. Ultra Brasserie
How much is it: Dhs44
How it comes: Smashed on a thick wedge of bloomer toast that has been spread with fresh ricotta cheese and lime dukka (a mixture of crushed herbs and spices), and topped with two perfectly poached eggs. This filling feast won a spot on our 50 Best Eats Of 2015 list. It’s good value too.
Marina Plaza, Dubai Marina, Dubai, daily 7am to 10pm. Tel: (04) 2775644. Metro: Damac. ultra.ae
2. Pots, Pans And Boards
How much is it: Dhs60
How it comes: At Tom Aikens’ new spot at the Beach opposite JBR, super fresh avocado is mashed and heaped onto two pieces of crunchy toast, then topped with melt-in-the-mouth slices of Cecina de Leon, a smoked and dried beef. Our only complaint with this one is the serving size – the individual slices aren’t that much bigger than large canapés.
The Beach opposite JBR, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai, daily 9am to midnight. Tel: (04) 4561959. Taxi: JA Ocean View Hotel. facebook.com/potspansandboards
3. Common Grounds
How much is it: Dhs43 (add poached eggs for an extra Dhs15)
How it comes: Tom And Serg gave the humble avo’ a prime spot on the menu at their original Al Quoz café, and their latest opening in Mall Of The Emirates has followed suit. At Common Grounds it’s piled onto soy and linseed toast and poshed up with some ricotta, chilli flakes and “evoo”, which we initially assumed was some obscure, rare, gourmet ingredient we’d never heard of, but have since learned stands for Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Oh.
Mall Of The Emirates, Al Barsha, Dubai, daily 8am to 10pm. Tel: (04) 4551663. Metro: Mall Of The Emirates. facebook.com/commongroundsdubai
4. Café 102
How much is it: Dhs65
How it comes: A lot of thought goes into making the dishes at Comptoir’s Cafe 102 as nourishing and nutritious as possible, so here your avocado crostini comes with a topping of alfalfa sprouts (packed with calcium and vitamins K and C), macadamia sauce (a rich source of iron and zinc), and a side serving of leafy salad. This is the smuggest way to enjoy your avo fix.
Villa 102 Beach Road, Jumeirah 1, Dubai, daily 8.30am to 9pm. Tel: (04) 3854555. Taxi: Opposite Jumeirah Beach Centre. comptoir102.com
5. Urban Bistro
How much is it: Dhs40
How it comes: The revamped breakfast menu at this Media City favourite haunt now includes the green stuff, naturally. Here it’s spread on to multi-seed toast with mascarpone cheese spiked with Sriracha hot sauce, and a dab of beetroot chutney. There are ample options for a protein boost too; pick from a poached egg, tuna tataki, smoked salmon, seared beef or prawns.
