Our top pick of the movies out in cinemas this week is Star Trek Beyond, which marks the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi franchise (plus Dubai gets a starring role in it – well, kind of…).

Here are all the new flicks you’ll be able to go see from today…

(And here are 11 other things to do this weekend.)

STAR TREK BEYOND

We’re excited for the latest Star Trek film, even if it’s just to catch a glimpse of Dubai, which was one of the shoot locations last year. We think our city is probably a stand-in for the utopian spaceport of Yorktown, where the Starship Enterprise docks for a rescue mission that ends up turning into an ambush. Expect the usual blockbuster action, along with lots of laughs and heart – the film marks the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, and is dedicated to two stars who’ve since passed away – Leonard Nimoy, (the original Spock) and Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

In the sequel to Tim Burton’s journey to Wonderland, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has to return to the land of Cheshire cats and pocketwatch-wearing rabbits. This visit, she has to travel through time (Time is also a character in the film, played by Sacha Baron Cohen) to save the family of the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and help the Queen of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter). It’s decent popcorn fare, but it does make us miss the days when Depp made really good movies.

THE CONJURING 2

Genuinely scary horror films these days are rare – most just throw together a dark house, some old dolls and a creepy child, then call it a day. The Conjuring was one of the few to illicit genuine fear from movie goers, and its sequel seems to be just as blood curdling. Based on the files of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), it’s a story set in the 1970s about a family being terrorised by a malevolent force in their own home.
