The tremors were felt all over the capital late this evening

Abu Dhabi has been rocked by a large earthquake centred near the Iran-Iraq border.

The quake struck at 10.24pm on Sunday, UAE time. According to the US Geological Survey, it was centred 103km southeast of the city of As-Sulaymaniyah in Iraq, and had a magnitude of 7.3.

The quake was felt widely across the Middle East, including as far away as the UAE – as well as here in the capital, it was also felt up the road in Dubai.

Many Abu Dhabi residents have taken to social to report the quake.

Reports coming in now are claiming that tragically, more than 200 people have died in the quake in Iran alone, according to Iranian State Media, with almost 2,000 injured.
