Interview: Conor Maynard talks to What's On ahead of his Dubai gig
The British singer takes a break from recording new material to talk collaborations, electric performances, and getting stuck in the sand…
Straight off the back of the announcement that legendary DJ Tiesto is the first artist to perform at new nightclub Gotha, the venue has announced that singer, songwriter and YouTube star Conor Maynard will also be joining the DJ. He’ll be joined by friend and fellow singer William Singe, with house DJ Martin Solveig completing the impressive first week line up.
Ahead of his gig at the new super club this Friday, the 25-year-old Brit singer took a break from recording new material to talk to What’s On about downtime in Dubai, music and his 2018 to-do list…
What’s On: You were last here at the end of last year, are you looking forward to coming back?
Conor Maynard: I am massively looking forward to coming back to Dubai. I always try and come to Dubai at least once a year, I love it, I have so much fun every time I come.
WO: This will be your first performance at the newly opened Gotha, what can we expect?
CM: It’s going to be really really cool. Whenever it’s the opening of a new venue or new club I always try and make it exciting and interactive. I want to have everyone singing along, dancing and really get the party started. That’s the plan.
WO: So when you’re not performing, have you got a bit of down time you can spend in Dubai, what can we find you getting up to?
CM: last time I was in Dubai I was given two amazing super cars to drive around; one Lamborghini and one G-Wagen, though I ended up getting the G-Wagen stuck in the sand. On the Instagram post it was all very glamorous whereas the reality was that I was stuck in the sand for three hours and had to be rescued by a family who happened to be passing. The worst part was I was the only one that got stuck – so that was pretty embarrassing.
WO: So what’s coming in 2018?
CM: I’ve been working for the last few years on original material so there’s sure to be new music coming. I’ve been doing the remixes and covers online to keep giving the fans something to listen to, but they should definitely get excited for new music coming. I’m in the studio right now, I just want to make sure it’s perfect before people hear it.
WO: You’ve done some covers with some amazing artists, is there anyone still on the bucket list?
CM: There’s a whole bunch of people. I’ve done a cover with Madison Beer and performed recently in London with her which was really cool, it would be really good to do an original track together. I’m a big fan of Anne Marie, I think she’s amazing and I’d love to do a song with her. I’d love to jump on a track with Marshmello too, he’s a fantastic artist.
WO: What are you listening to at the minute?
CM: I mean I strictly only listen to me…[laughs] no I’m joking. A song I’m loving at the minute is a son Lil Dicky has done with Chris Brown, it’s got cameos from Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled and Kendal Jenner, it’s a very clever track. But I think one of my favourite songs this year is Wait by Maroon 5.
WO: Before you go, have you got a message for your Dubai fans?
CM: Yes definitely! I cannot wait to see everyone at Gotha. I’m also really looking forward to seeing my buddy Will Singe who’s performing too and we hope to see you all there…
