Prepare to step back in time with this old-American supper club style bar…

Looking to switch up your usual haunt? Phoenix Social Club is a stylish new bar that’s just opened its doors in Downtown Dubai.

Found in the H Hotel, it replaces the long-standing, contemporary Japanese restaurant, Okku. But is it worth a visit?

Reminiscent of a 1940’s glamorous New York social club, Phoenix Social Club comes complete with images of iconic film stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn adorning the walls.

Glamour is certainly the theme of the place, with glitzy crystal light fittings surrounding the bar, and plush leather seating throughout. The interior consists of sleek black marble and soft brown woods, set against luxurious orange and blue velvet cushions.

On the drinks menu, choose from creative concoctions such as Monroe’s Charm (Dhs55), finished off with candy floss or stick to classic with a New York Sour (Dhs45).

The restaurant is set down on a lower level than the bar, which nicely distinguishes between those there to dine and those just wanting to enjoy an evening at the bar, with the sounds of soul, funk and jazz transporting you to yesteryear.

On the menu, there’s a bit of everything. Tandoor breads sit alongside small plates like the hamachi ceviche (Dhs70) and large plates such as black cod (Dhs75), designed to share. There’s also a number of vegan-friendly dishes such as the tandoor bread with tofu (Dhs30) and the Miso pumpkin & sweet potato (Dhs40), which are some of the most delicious plates on the menu.

For a wallet-friendly deal, head down for ‘Experimental Tuesdays’, where guests will be taken on a ‘culinary journey’ trying mystery dishes created by the chef, along with cocktails and drinks to compliment the flavours. It’s Dhs350 for house beverages and Dhs290 for the soft drinks package.

Phoenix Social Club, H Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, Downtown Dubai. Sundays closed, Monday & Wednesdays 5pm to 1am, Tuesdays 5pm to 3am, Thursday & Friday 5pm to 6am, Saturdays 5pm to 3am. Tel: (04) 338 3434.
