Yarn knot gonna believe this…

A huge ‘Knitathon’ event is happening in Dubai Sports City this Friday, September 13 – and it’s set to attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

Since December 2018, residents in Dubai have been working hard to knit 2,800 individual one square metre blankets. These blankets will then be woven together this weekend on Thursday September 12 and Friday September 13 as the team of avid knitters attempt to create the largest blanket in the world.

The blanket will be adjudicated by Guinness World Records with the aim of beating the previous record of 1,994 square metres. The current record is held by Knitters of the World, Ireland and was set in August 2018, but this weekend Dubai hopes to beat it with a blanket of 2,800 square metres.

Made with love, the team is also hoping to break a record for the largest display of knitted hearts. Following the record break, the blanket will be divided up and sent to various children’s charities around the world, with some 3,200 children set to benefit from the blankets.

The event will be the centre point of the family day at Dubai Sports City, with festivities kicking off from 3pm at the Football Academy, Dubai Sports City.

Dubai already has a string of world records under its belt including architectural marvels such as the world’s tallest tower (Burj Khalifa), tallest hotel (Gevora), tallest residential building (Princess Tower) and largest building in a shape of a picture frame (Dubai Frame).

We also have a few more unusual ones, including the most people performing burpees, greatest distance skied on an indoor ski slope in eight hours, largest puzzle completed underwater and the largest gathering of people dressed as nurses…

Good luck to the team!
