The Red Bull Academy Weekender offers up four days of off-kilter music
Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, The Black Madonna and more to perform in Dubai next month…
Dubai’s live music calendar is busier than ever.
2017 already boasts performances from megastars Mariah Carey and Tom Jones, with an upcoming concert from British Indie heavyweights New Order next week. There’s certainly no shortage of high-calibre live music to engross oneself in – especially in these cooler months.
For those less interested in the glitz and glamour of mainstream commercial pop stars, Dubai is also slowly becoming a destination for more eclectic and underground international acts as the city’s burgeoning music scene starts to make waves around the globe.
Nowhere will this be more in evidence than at the Red Bull Music Academy Weekender next month.
Taking place from April 12-15 across a variety of venues around the city, the four-day festival will bring together over 30 international and regional artists, spanning a mix of genres ranging from hip-hop to synthpop, Detroit techno and everything in between.
Highlights include a set from Mixmag’s 2016 DJ of the Year, The Black Madonna (13 April, On 42, Media One Hotel), a beachside ‘Sunrise Session’ with electronic looping artist Julianna Barwick (14 April, Kite Beach), and a banger of a closing party with a line-up that reads like a veritable who’s-who of hipper-than-thou MC’s like Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt and Princess Nokia (14 April, Dubai Design District).
Scattered throughout the weekend, Red Bull will also be hosting workshops and exhibitions “celebrating the many elements and unique counterparts prevalent in the city’s new musical and cultural identity.” Sounds like a hoot to us.
If you’re after a weekend of off-kilter music (and let’s face it, a lot of beards) then be sure to mark this down in your diary.
