Four great ways to get some exercise in Abu Dhabi over the next few weeks
Summer is officially over – and the cooler months mean you’ve got no excuse when it comes to getting outdoors keeping fit. Here’s four great events happening in the capital in October and November
Run up to stay fit
You can burn 200 calories or more every ten minutes by continuously running up flights of stairs (depending on how much you weigh). The Tennis Stadium at Zayed Sports City has plenty of steps, and you can gallop up them to your heart’s content every Monday night as part of Daman’s TrainZSC. The sessions are free but you must register online before.
Zayed Sports City, Al Madina Al Riyadiya, Abu Dhabi, Mon 6pm to 9pm, free. Taxi: Zayed Sports City. trainzsc.com
Run a kilomarathon – and raise money for charity
Not quite got the legs to run a full marathon yet? If 26.2 miles is too far, you can run a more gentle 26.2 kilometres at the annual Westin Kilomarathon Run, which takes place at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. It’s a night run where you’ll complete six laps of a floodlit, garden course, but there’s also three- and one-lap fun run options available. Your entry fee goes towards a good cause – the 2017 Road To Awareness fundraising campaign that has been helping kids in need in countries such as Nigeria, South Africa and Mozambique since 2008.

Walk against diabetes
The UAE certainly has diabetes in its sights at the moment – October saw the introduction of new taxes on sugary and fizzy drinks in a bid to help combat obesity, and this month sees the return of Walk at Yas Marina Circuit. Walk2017 is the same as previous years – you pay Dhs10 and walk with thousands of other Abu Dhabians around the city’s iconic Formula One track on Yas Island. The initiative is organised by Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Mubadala, Healthpoint and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. This year is a special one for Walk – it’s the tenth anniversary of the event. Kids under 16 get in for free, and as well as the stroll around the track, there’ll be live entertainment.

And one for kids – enter the Mini Dash relay race
UAE-based sports company The Dash organise relay races all over the UAE, and this month they’re holding one in Abu Dhabi for young athletes. The Mini Dash takes place at Umm Al Emarat Park and there’s races for kids aged five to seven (a 200m dash), eight to 10 (400m dash) and 11 to 13 (800m dash). As well as the races, you’ll also find an activity village at each Dash event that has a bouncy castle, arts and crafts stalls, health and wellness activities and nutrition advice for nippers.
