It’s the summer of Supermoons…

Stargazers, take note. A Strawberry Supermoon is set to brighten the skies of UAE this week. It is one of three Super Moons of 2022 so it’s one you don’t want to miss.

The Strawberry Super Moon will rise tomorrow June 14, 2022.

But, what is a Supermoon?

A Supermoon is a term used to describe the point at which the moon’s orbit gets the closest to earth. It results in a slightly larger than usual size of the lunar disk.

Sadly, the moon doesn’t mean that moon is going to change its shape or turn a shade of red. The name actually comes from Algonquin, a tribe of Native America and the full moon was a sign to them that it was time to harvest wild strawberries. Now, there’s a fun fact you can share and impress your mates with.

If we do see a that has a bit of red colour, it is most likely because as it rises above the horizon, it catches the colour of the rising sun.

So, how can I see the Strawberry Supermoon in the UAE?

Well, the obvious answer would be to look up into the sky in the evening on Tuesday, June 14…

But, if you want to see the supermoon in all its glory, you can join the Dubai Astronomy Group at Al Thuraya Astronomy Center at Mushrif Park, Dubai on the night.

The event is from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Check out the detail and register here. It includes a lecture explaining the Supermoon phenomenon, a naked eye observation and a telescope observation of the Supermoon.

Dubai Astronomy Group usually live-streams the event on its YouTube channel, so be sure to check that out if you can’t attend the event or see the moon from home.
