It looked like someone had taken a bite out of the moon…

Last night, stargazers in the UAE were treated to a pretty special celestial event – a partial lunar eclipse.

As we explained in a previous story, the phenomenon occurs when the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, but in this instance it was not a totally straight line, thus the moon only being partially covered.

If you looked up at the sky between 7.50pm and 11.21pm last night, you would have caught a glimpse as it was clearly visible to the naked eye.

If you missed it, never fear because many of Dubai’s residents took to social media to post awesome photos of the event, here are some of our favourites:

This first shot from @philxxx2010 on Twitter clearly shows part of the moon covered by the Earth’s shadow – otherwise known as the umbra.

This video must have been shot on a pretty powerful camera to be able to zoom in that close.

A group of keen astronomy enthusiasts also gathered en masse at the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre in Mushrif Park to witness the event together.

We absolutely love this shot of the moon looking pale and lonely in the vastness of space.
