Dubai Municipality has unveiled a new online system to help consumers identify fake health and beauty products

The new initiative, unveiled by the Dubai Municipality yesterday, is a smart, integrated system called Montaji, designed for recording, managing and monitoring consumed products.

But what exactly does that mean?

Basically, the new online system will register, monitor and regulate consumer goods related to public health. An app of the same name will launch in a couple of months.

All consumer safety products sold in Dubai, such as health supplements, cosmetic and personal care products, perfumes, detergents, soaps, packaging materials and biocides such as antibacterial products, must be registered with the “Montaji” system, said Naseem Mohammed Rafee, head of the Consumer Product Safety Section.

Merchants register their products through the ‘Montaji’ system, a process that will take under 4 minutes, according to Dubai Municipality. Then, consumers will be able to access the database and check for municipality-approved products.

So if consumers have any doubt about the authenticity of their products, they can check it on the Montaji system. All they have to do is enter the barcode or name of the product, verify all the details, then Montaji gets to work.

“Our employees are going to check all single information in terms of ingredients and documents and make sure these products are complying with the approved specifications” explained Dr. Naseem Mohammed, Acting Head of Consumer Products Safety Section.

Hopefully, this will mean that there will be a lot less chance of mistakenly buying your favourite perfume or health supplement, only to find out it’s a rip-off.
