'Ladies in the lens' at Gulf Photo Plus - artist interview
Gulf Photo Plus gallery kicks off its new season with She Who Tells A Story, an exhibition of four female photographers from across the Arab world. We spoke to one, Laura Boushnak, who was born in Palestine and raised in Kuwait.
What are you exhibiting at Gulf Photo Plus? My recent work from Yemen, which is part of my ongoing project, I Read I Write. The project looks at women and education across the Arab world.
Who are the women in the photos? My subjects are the first female members of their family to pursue higher education. The words on the photos are their own handwritten text based on our conversations. The women describe their achievements and aspirations, as well as the challenges they face in an ultra-conservative society. Often the prevailing role for women is limited to marriage and the home.
What do you hope to show through your work? That education is an important means for women to improve their lives.
What do you love most about your job? The best part of the whole process is meeting inspiring people and listening to their interesting stories.
