Andy Murray joins all-star line-up at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship
What’s On has details of tennis tournament where fans can see Andy Murray in Abu Dhabi at Mubadala World Tennis Championship. Plus, how to get tickets.
It’s time to build a Murray Mound in Abu Dhabi.
Every tennis fan’s favourite taciturn Scot has confirmed he will play the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in the capital on New Year’s Day.
Andy Murray is the fourth major player to confirm his attendance at the three-day tournament, with world number one Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Stanislas Wawrinka also on the all-star line up.
It will be a fourth appearance at Mubadala for Murray, who won the inaugural event in 2009.
Murray, 27, crashed out of the US Open following a quarter-final defeat at the hands of Djokovic in New York earlier this month.
Marin Cilic’s eventual victory at the tournament has seen Murray slip out of the world top 10 for the first time since 2008, so the Scotsman has his gaze firmly fixed on a fresh start in 2015.
“I played some good tennis, but I think I can do better,” the player said after his US Open campaign. “The Grand Slams are over for this year now and I’m already looking forward to the start of next season which for me will be in Abu Dhabi at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.”
The former Wimbledon champion said the opening of the tournament on January 1 was a “symbolic start date”.
“The line-up so far is incredibly strong and after the winter break we should all be back firing on all cylinders, which is going to mean exciting tennis for the fans in Abu Dhabi,” Murray said.
The four confirmed players due to step out on centre court in the capital in January hold 24 Grand Slam titles between them.
They will battle for victory and a $250,000 prize pot at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City.
Two more major names will be added to the six-star line-up ahead of the event.
Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Roddick have all played at the men’s tournament in the past.
