She racked up 14 top 5 singles in the UK as one-fifth of ‘90s pop sensation Steps, so Lisa Scott Lee knows a thing or two about making it in showbiz.
Now the singer, who lives in Dubai with her husband, professional dancer Johnny Shentall, has established the Dubai Performing Arts Academy to share her expertise with a new generation of pop hopefuls.
Open to children aged between four and 18, the school aims to equip its pupils with all the singing, dancing and acting skills they need to become future stars of stage and screen.
“Since we moved to Dubai we have had a dream to give aspiring performers here in the Emirates the opportunity to experience and enjoy an all-round training and foundation in performing arts,” says Lisa. “We have two young children ourselves and we have built the Academy using experience as both performers and parents.”
Scott Lee, herself a graduate of renowned British stage school Italia Conti, says the Dubai Performing Arts Academy will give children in the UAE the chance to learn from top international talent, and has revealed plans to fly in “international singing sensations” and West End stars as guest teachers.
“We truly believe that we are giving children a real chance to build their confidence, develop their skills, make new friends, and for the ones that want to follow their dreams, the first step on their road to becoming a star.
“We have brought the top dancing, singing and acting talent from across the globe to ensure that our students are able to learn from the best and we also have lots of plans for guest teachers to join us throughout the year – from international singing sensations through to some of the biggest stars from the West End.”
Scott Lee stormed the charts with cheesy pop quintet Steps in the late ‘90s, scoring hits with catchy numbers like 5, 6, 7, 8 and their cover of the Bee Gees’ track Tragedy.
Her new venture is based between Fitness First at The Lakes and The Meadows Community Club, with children split into classes based on their age.
