Some might think escaping to the beach or park would be the ideal time to switch off from the rest of the world. Recharge. Maybe take a copy of your favourite magazine….

But following the launch of GITEX Technology Week, it seems our phones can now be glued to the palm of our hands, thanks to free public wi-fi being made available throughout Dubai.

Dubai Municipality and du have signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ to create what they’re calling ‘smart’ parks and beaches.

“We announced earlier that we would have smart parks, smart beaches and smart public places in Dubai. Now we are introducing wi-fi services in these places,” a spokesman said.

Creek Park, Al Mamzar Beach Park and Al Barsha Park are among up to 20 areas to be serviced by the new technologies. It is expected the first phase will be rolled out before April 2015. Jumeirah Beach Park and Safa Park will not receive full service until at least 2016 due to the on-going canal project works.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the Municipality’s new Parks and Beach App, being hailed as a complete guide to the locations around town, their entry fees, weather conditions and other amenities.

We still think you should just take a What’s On for company.

The announcement is one of many expected to be made through the week as part of Dubai’s push to become a ‘Smart City’.

Speaking at the official launch, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and General Supervisor of the project, said: “We are setting up smart infrastructure that will shift the Emirate to new heights of quality services.”
