The city’s favourite self-effacing music initiative, Freshly Ground Sounds, returns tomorrow night with a special one-off Valentines acoustic extravaganza, entitled For the Love of Music.
Taking place on Wednesday 11 February at the Dubai Garden Centre, team Freshly and the Roseleaf café crew are set to transform the beloved botanical outdoor area into a magical open-air urban garden.
Aside from the musical arm of this special Valentine’s edition, there’s also a pop-up market showcasing a variety of local independent brands including YAMA Clothing, Sunny’s POP, VITAMINS & VINYLS, True Love Cards among others. Also on offer – and in true hipster fashion – limited edition homemade, handpacked jam will be made available to all supporters of indie music. The money raised will help to fund future events. Head to Freshly’s Jammin’ Station for more. (Editor’s Note: We’ve sampled the strawberry, rosemary and cracked pepper offering and it’s a thumbs up from us).
Since it began in November 2013, Freshly Ground Sounds has provided a platform for local artists to play their own music or covers to growing audiences in humble, community-focused venues around the UAE. Artists from all ages and walks of life are welcome to submit their request to play at an FGS event but most take to the take without so much as an audition – such is the trust in talent.
But the risk continues to pay off and talented artists emerge each night.
Over the past year, dozens of local bands and solo musicians have performed in front of audiences in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, wowing crowds with raw talent that – prior to Freshly’s inception – was rarely unearthed in the UAE.
Now, these live acoustic gigs unveil new acts, bring on old favourites but continue to foster that same nurturing vibe.
Don’t forget to pack your picnic blanket.
