Former Massive Attack tour DJ, one half of Way Out West, veteran of the once groundbreaking Global Underground mix series and Hope Recordings boss, Nick Warren might have been in the game for 20-plus years, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

In fact, with the Ibiza season about to kick off, the Bristolian has just announced a new residency on the White Isle. The Sound Garden Ibiza Sessions – Nick Warren and Friends is primed to do what it says on the tin, with Nick inviting the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Eelke Kleijn, Guy Mantzur, 16 Bit Lolitas and Nicko Izzo to join him on the decks each Monday at Next, an intimate space that’s part of Eden nightclub. It kicks off on June 8, just days after Nick lands in Dubai to play at O2 Nightclub.

What’s more, there’s a new Way Out West album waiting in the wings for release with Nick and his WOW partner Jody Wisternoff already dropping tracks from it in their latest live shows.

With such an impressive past and much more to come in the future, it’s little surprise that Nick has plenty to say. Plus, he has the ideal solution for dealing with complaining DJs…

On emerging talent: 
“I’m always looking for new sounds and ideas. The new ways of making music have brought an enormous number of young new producers. It takes me much longer to sift through the vast amounts of music being released on a weekly basis, but there are so many amazing artists and tracks out there that every day’s
an inspiration.”

On music tastes:
“I’ve been very lucky to experience so many changes in electronic music. Having varied taste is an essential tool for any DJ. I’m a huge fan of melody and good basslines, and I’ve always loved the more indie dance scene.”

On stardom:
“I don’t really feel like a superstar DJ. I just want to play the best music I can to likeminded people.”

On passion:
“When I look out and see people dancing and smiling the whole time, I love it. Once I lose that passion for finding good music then I’ll stop straight away, or else if I’m too old to do it.”

On his career:
“I’ve been in my career for over 20 years now. I think it’s harder for people to have a career of that length now because trends change so fast. It’s very much about EDM at the moment, but that’s not going to be a long-term career for lots of those guys.”

On complaining DJs:
“If a DJ complains about touring around the world, give him a slap over the head and say, ‘Nick Warren told me to do that.’ I can get on a plane and fly to Argentina in 15 hours, and it doesn’t feel like you’ve been travelling all that time.”

On his music collection:
“I’ve got a record collection of about 40,000 to 50,000 albums. I’ve thought, ‘Do I need them?’ But I don’t feel good about giving all that heritage away for nothing, so I think I’ll just keep hold of it.”

On the future:
“I love what I do, and still have a huge desire to make and find electronic music – it’s an addiction, I suppose. I feel there’s still better to come, which pushes me to make more music and try to get it better and better.”
