We have two words for you: Pecha Kucha. No, it’s not some trendy new club. Pecha Kucha is Japanese for ‘chatter’, and is a speech with very specific constraints: you have to present 20 slides, for 20 seconds each, so the total time you’re allowed to speak is just six minutes and 40 seconds.
It sounds strict, but Pecha Kucha Nights are actually fun, informal events, and they’re hosted around the world. Pecha Kucha Night Dubai Volume XVI is taking place at The Third Line on July 10 and all are welcome to attend or take part.
The theme of the event is City Storytelling, and people from all industries and walks of life are invited to talk about their experiences of the city.
It’s the first Pecha Kucha Night Dubai night since November 2014. Past events have featured such diverse speakers as an Emirati town planner, the founder of the Movember movement in the UAE, and a charity initiative that works with women from Bedouin villages.
We chatted to Zahra Soar, co-founder and organiser of Rock Camp for Girls UAE, who took part in the event at The Archive in Safa Park in 2013.
“I’m so happy Pecha Kucha is returning to the UAE,” she said. “It’s a great exercise for getting your thoughts in order and has helped me explain RCFG UAE in a simple but interesting way to parents, children and the public.”
When asked why people should attend, she added: “It will inspire you – whether it’s a small business, creative idea or a charity, we have all these great ideas in Dubai and sharing them with people can only be a good idea.”
Pecha Kucha Night events have been held in Dubai since 2007 and the new event marks its return to its original venue at The Third Line in Al Quoz.
